Cynthia Kukla is teaching a three-day intensive workshop “Spring into Watercolors” at the Southern Illinois Art Workshop. This venerable program was started decades ago by a University of Illinois art professor who wanted Southern Illinois art professionals to have more contact with educators and with professional workshops. This spring workshop starts Monday May 21 and continues through Wednesday May 23, 2012. This cost-effective workshop is held at the DuBoise Center near Effingham. “Spring into Watercolors” Dust off your paint box after a long winter! Come paint a serene landscape or still life, learning or refreshing your basic watercolor skills. We always need to recall the importance of a confident, flat wash. For details and creating depth, learn or improve painting a graded wash. Getting better at understanding color combinations and color mixing is the most important and we will focus on color every day. After three happy days painting, you will have brighter and more confident watercolors in your personal portfolio. This ancient medium uses hot wax as the vehicle for the paint pigment which results in a luminous quality to the final work. We will have canvases for the yearly project available at a cost, entry fee of $15. Remember to bring a work in progress and a Valentine smile to share (bring your Valentine too). Hopefully the transparent oil workshop will give us lots to show off! Please remember the Children’s Show which takes place the weekend before our meeting, we need lots of help! Stay warm and see you on the 14th.

Lake Land College Foundation to host annual photo show The Lake Land College Foundation will host its 33rd Annual Photography Show sponsored by the General Electric Mattoon Lamp Plant and invites professional, amateur and student photographers to submit their work. Student entries are open to grades seven through 12. Photographers entering the show will compete for prizes in five categories. The categories are as follows: • Category One: any subject with the work done totally by the photographer, film or digital; • Category Two: any subject, film or digital, with the photo taken by the photographer but commercially printed; • Category Three: any photograph following a theme of “Black and White”, taken by the photographer (note: the theme does not have to be limited to black and white photography, but rather the photographer’s perception of subject matter and how it relates to the theme); • Category Four: digital manipulation photography such as electronic manipulation including scanning, cropping and color change; • Category Five: student entries open to grades 7-12 only. Awards for Categories One through Three will be $100 in cash to both the professional and amateur winners. Category Four will be awarded a single prize of $100 and students in Category Five will each be awarded a prize of $50 in cash. The Best of Show award will be $150 in cash and will be awarded to the best overall entry for the professional and amateur categories. New for 2012 is the Best of Show award of $100 in cash for the student category. Each photographer may enter two photos per category. Photographs entered may have been taken anytime, but not previously entered in a Lake Land College Foundation Photography Show.
